Day 49 September 20 Weedsport to Herkimer

Continued on the Erie Canalway again. I was never tired of watching the canal, both the main and abandoned parts. The abandoned canal is much narrower and portions of it completely dry. There are ruins of past dams and locks. Bridges over this part are mainly for walk only.

Saw a junior merlin on the trail side that didn’t fly away as I approached. It might be injured. I couldn’t help but hoped it would be ok. There was a wildlife refuge on Onondaga Lake outside Syracuse. A bridge over a railroad provided a grant view of it.

After coming back to the US, Peter took a train from Buffalo to Utica to skip the part of the Erie Canalway Trail that he had rode before and to catch up with me. We met again at Herkimer, the second time we met after Missoula, MT.
