Day 31 September 2 Gackle to Kindred

Video: State Highway 46

I enjoyed continuous trailwinds since I left Bismarck. From Gackle to Kindred was almost a straight shot to the east on State Highway 46, which is well paved. Crossed several rivers (James, Maple, and Sheyenne).

I planned to camp at the Kindred city park where many cross-continent riders have done. I called in advance and was told there was no reservation needed and there was no charge. When I got there, I went to their only grocery store to shop for dinner.  The shop staff told me there was no public toilet at the park. The toilets of a swimming pool and a gym in the park were usually locked at night. This made me worried. A local shopper (Matt) heard our conversation and called a city worker (Richard) at home and asked him to check on this. Richard, who lives a block from the store, came to meet us. We went to the park. Richard made sure the toilet room was not locked and advised me of the best spot for camping in the park. In such small towns where everyone knows everyone, people make extra efforts to help strangers.

As I set up the tent, a man took his kids to the playground at the park. He had seen many bikers camping there. When he learned about the fund raising for the American Heart Association, he copied the QR code. Many people who donated through the GoFundMe site were total strangers to both Peter and me.
