Day 29 August 31 New Salem to Bismarck

This was another short ride to give me a half-day rest in Bismarck to get ready for the coming days when there were not many options except covering long distances between available lodging locations. This was my shortest daily ride of the trip.

I met Mile, who was on his way from Bismarck to Seattle. He was completing his cross-continent ride in segments. He could not stand the boredom of solo ride for many days. He rode two segments in the past two years. He stopped somewhere, flew home, and flew back the next year where he stopped before and continue. This was his third segment. He totally relied on Google map for directions. We exchanged our experience of being screwed by Google map and RidewithGPS  (running into dead ends or private properties) and road information.

Later I met Dr. Dennis Godby, a 69-year-old medical doctor, who was on a mission of walking across the US to raise awareness of health equity. He was doing that in five segments, one in a year. This was his fourth one, from Bismarck to Bozeman. He was my hero. His website is https://walkusaforhealthequity.org/

I crossed the Missouri River into Bismarck. Did laundry and routine bike maintenance, replaced a leaking air sleeping pad, sent more stuff back home, and got food for the coming days.

Today also marked the half point in time of the trip. I had covered 47% of the total distance. Hope was in reach to complete the trip as planned.
