Day 15 August 17 Wallace to St Regis

Video: Crossing St. Regis River

From Wallace we were on paved roads for a while until the map sent us to the East Fork Willow CK – Stevens Lake Trail and Northern Pacific (Nor-Pac) Trail, both being rail trails with rough surfaces. We proceeded very slowly regardless of going up or down. Occasionally, ATVs would pass us with dust in their wakes. A guy riding an ATV with his handgun carrier in front of his chest chatted with us. He didn’t think the trails were suitable for our bikes and he wished us the best.

We crossed the state line into MT at the Lookout Pass. There was no sign, only a shed that marked the highest point of the Nor-Pac Trail.  We continued on gravel trails on the MT side of the pass: the Ford Pass/Old Mullan Pass, Hiawatha Trail (another well known trail that attracts riders from all over the places), and Route of the Olympian/Milwauke Trail. They crosses the St Regis River several times. The river was shallow and clear.

We camped at the city park of St Regis MT without permits. We planned to go further but it was too late to continue. We couldn’t reach anyone from the police department or city hall by phone to ask them to turn off park sprinklers. We chose to set our tents in the woods at the edge of the park. But one sprinkler managed to send water inside my tent. People say no good deed goes unpunished. All my bad deeds were punished. I just get punished no matter what I do.
